1. Overview and selection criteria

Numerous varieties of plastic are available on the market today, but for reasons of raw material cost, the bulk of plastic packaging is made from polyolefins, particularly high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP). However, we should mention the existence of products made from polystyrene and ABS (poly(acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene)), among others, which offer numerous advantages.

HDPE, used in certain cases with an expanding agent, is characterized by its good cold resistance. Plastic pallets, crates and bins can therefore be adapted for deep-freezing applications (up to – 40°C). PP, for its part, is characterized by good heat resistance (around 100°C) and good bending behavior, enabling, in particular, the production of thin integrated hinges (0.2 to 0.3 mm).
