INTRODUCTION
With the boom in logistics, stacker cranes have become an essential element of both automated logistics distribution centers (CDLA) and production centers, where they act as a support system (flexible workshop concept). Acting as intermediaries between warehousing and order-picking or production activities, they can handle pallets, containers, totes, drawers and more.
The use of stacker cranes is part of an effort to rationalize production and distribution tools. Combined with an efficient control system, they offer advantages that boost productivity, performance and quality.
They can be found in all kinds of industries: distribution, distance selling, spare parts management, food processing, pharmaceuticals, automotive, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, banking, etc., offering specific additional advantages such as traceability, health and safety, environmental improvement, precision, service levels, etc.
Aimed at professional logistics managers and project managers, this article provides a comprehensive overview of the different storage techniques applied to stacker cranes, and offers decision-makers an example of economic comparison with other competing solutions. It is essential to read this article in conjunction with other articles on logistics, handling, storage and order picking.
