7. Management of maintenance department resources

This management function includes tasks designed to provide the resources required for maintenance activities. It's a cross-functional function in which everyone involved participates to varying degrees and at different levels. It also provides management with the economic data it needs to make decisions.

7.1 Inventory and other logistics management

The inventory management function is of particular importance because of the effects it can have on the availability and operating costs of production facilities. It is clear that an over-abundance of materials in stock will lead to cost overruns which can prove significant. On the other hand, depleted stocks, combined with long lead times, can lead to high levels of unavailability.
