    Overview

    ABSTRACT

Studies have proved that a certain number of pathologies and malfunctions noted in activities of household waste processing are linked to the organization of work and the design of equipment. This article presents the means in which to integrate human factors within the process of the design of a household waste sorting site. The analysis of results allows for correlating the health state, accidents and risks incurred. in order to achieve a safe design integrating the health and safety of the operator, an ergonomic analysis of the work appears to be essential as a feedback tool. In conclusion, a more general approach is offered with recommendations integrating requirements and the context of the activity.

     INTRODUCTION

Work analysis carried out at two sorting centers in the Paris region has identified the risks and malfunctions associated with household waste sorting. The study shows that a number of pathologies (e.g. osteo-articular pain) and malfunctions impacting on the quality of the outgoing product are linked to the organization of work and the design of the industrial system.

In order to equip the design process for better integration of human factors, we have studied the consideration given to health and safety during design projects for household waste treatment sites. Ergonomic analysis of work has proved to be a valuable feedback tool for safer design, both for industrial equipment and for future work organization.

General recommendations for designers are proposed, with the aim of better integrating user characteristics, activity requirements and work contexts.
