1.1 Packaging definitions and functions

The definition of packaging, set out in EU Directive 94/62 [1] , distinguishes and defines the various classes of packaging.

Packaging is any product made of materials of any kind, designed to contain and protect goods, from raw materials to finished products, to enable their handling and transportation from producer to consumer or user, and to ensure their presentation. All "disposable" items used for the same purpose must be considered as packaging.

Like the "glass material" itself, the use of glass containers goes back a long way, since as early as the 8th century B.C., the Egyptians...
