5. Conclusion

When making an investment decision, the choice of a solution naturally takes into account the benefits that will result from the expected functions and their performance.

However, it is essential to add other terms to the equation: their reliability, maintainability, logistical support, vulnerability to environmental constraints, and the overall cost of their life cycle, which is largely the result of these different aspects.

The consequences of malfunctions must therefore be added to operating performance, and it is not always easy for the designer or engineer evaluating competing systems to consider these opposing behaviors together.
