The first patent for the preparation of polycondensates from urea was filed by Czechoslovakian Hans John in Prague in 1918. The first melamine polycondensates were obtained in Germany (Henkel) and Switzerland (Ciba) in 1935.

1.1 Resins
Urea-based resins generally take the form of a syrup (aqueous solution) containing 50-65% solids. Some wood glues come in UF powder form, sometimes containing a hardener. Liquid glues may contain a filler (e.g. wood flour).
