5. Intrinsic improvement of barrier properties

The possibilities for improving barrier properties by inserting additives into a polymer matrix cover 2 strategies:

  • active charges that trap or catalyze the trapping of the permeant (oxygen scavengers);

  • passive fillers that increase the diffusion path of permeants (nanocomposites).

5.1 Active packaging: oxygen scavengers

Here, we'll be looking at absorbers integrated into the film, rather than absorbent bags linked to the contents.
