5. Mechanical properties of components
Composite materials used in pipe systems are mainly based on E-glass fibers and epoxy, polyester or vinyl ester resins. As beading results from microcracking of the matrix and decohesions between fibers and matrix, several authors have sought to study the influence of the mechanical properties of these constituents on beading.
5.1 Matrix
Thermosetting resins are obtained by mixing several compounds and harden through irreversible chemical reactions (cross-linking). The best-known are :
unsaturated polyester resins, mixtures of an unsaturated polymer, a reactive solvent and a catalyst;
vinyl ester resins, which are an extension of the above with unsaturation at the end of the polymer...
