5. Conclusion

Isosorbide is one of the biosourced molecules of the future whose use is intensifying. Industrial production is already well-established, and there is considerable scope for further development if production volumes approaching those of petroleum-based compounds are to be achieved in the long term. Given production tonnages, it's fairly obvious that a few points gain in synthesis yield would represent a significant gain. This gain is all the more crucial given that the cost of biobased materials is often a limitation to their development. Advances in synthesis and purification, as well as process intensification, are opening up new prospects for reducing the cost of isosorbide. The use of glucose derived from lignocellulosic material is also an important aspect for the future of this industry, which currently relies essentially on the use of glucose derived from starch.
