9. Main advantages and drawbacks

Among the advantages of the process, we can mention :

  • the molds are of relatively simple design and inexpensive compared to those of conventional processes. Indeed, the process is at low pressure, the mold therefore does not require high resistance ;

  • in the absence of pressure, there are no residual stresses of mechanical origin in the part ;

  • there is no loss of material ;

  • the machine is simple and economical. For example, a rotational molding machine costs three times less than an equivalent injection molding machine ;

  • parts with relatively complicated shapes can be rotomolded. This process is particularly well suited for large thick parts and, more recently for technical parts with multilayers, foamed layers...
