5. Application

To illustrate predictive methods for explosion effects, an example is given here.

An industrial propane storage site (figure 7 ) has an S1 sphere 50 m in diameter, two S2 and S3 spheres 14 m in diameter and four cylinders 3.5 m in diameter and 35 m in length. All tanks are elevated to a height of 3 m, and a height of 1 m for the various accessories above the tanks must be taken into account. An accidental leak occurs in the S2 sphere, releasing 4,000 kg of propane at a pressure of 6 bar. The gas cloud formed encounters an ignition source at S2, creating an explosion. The aim is to calculate the overpressure at distances R of 15 m, 75 m, 100 m and 250 m from the center of the explosion, using the three methods described above (TNT, TNO and BST).
