1. What are VTRs?

A VTR is a toxicological value defined for the purpose of quantifying a risk to human health from respiratory exposure based on exposure duration (acute, subchronic, or chronic). These values apply to the population as a whole, including sensitive population groups (children, pregnant women, the elderly, and the sick).

Please note

Acute and chronic VTRs can also be defined orally, in cases of food poisoning, but this is not the subject of this fact sheet.

1.1 Definition

VTRs are defined for all possibilities of accidental or fugitive exposure by inhalation. A distinction is made between:
