1. The Seveso accident
This accident had a major influence on the regulation of the chemical industry in the European Community, leading to the adoption of Directive 92/501/EEC, known as the Seveso Directive.
The human consequences of the accident were limited, as there were no direct casualties. There were, however, :
447 cases of chemical burns attributed to soda ;
179 cases of chloracne ;
34 cases presenting both symptoms.
The financial consequences of the accident are not generally reported in the documents dealing with this accident, but they must have been significant:
