2. Terminology

MBF and risk terminology has been the subject of specific developments since the concepts described in section 1 were first developed. Section 2 presents the main terms associated with these maintenance concepts, ordering their descriptions according to the order in which they appear in the MBF and RBIM approaches.

2.1 Main terms used

• Inherent reliability: inherent reliability, also known as "intrinsic reliability", is the reliability of a piece of equipment defined at the design stage, under predefined manufacturing, operating and maintenance conditions.

• Operational reliability: operational reliability is obtained by evaluating equipment performance based on experience feedback, using appropriate statistical tools.
