1. General considerations for reliability diagrams
The Reliability Block Diagram (RBD), also known as the Reliability Diagram, is defined in the international standard IEC 61078 as a logical graphical representation of a system showing how the operational states of its sub-entities (represented by blocks) and their combinations affect the operational state of the system.
This definition differs from that given by the IEV 192 international electrotechnical vocabulary, which refers to reliability instead of serviceability. This distinction is important because, in the general case and in the mathematical sense of the term, the reliability diagram does not calculate the reliability of the system as a function of the reliability of its components, but only its availability as a function of the availability of its components.
