Overview
ABSTRACT
Certain early biological treatments of air and in particular odors were industrially implemented in France in the 1980s. At this time, 300 industrial installations exist, principally biofilters but also biowashers. Simulation models of the performances of biological processes have been developed: modeling of biofilters, percolator filters and biowashers. Application examples of these models illustrate all the interests of such an approach for the design, dimensioning and operational management of processes.

INTRODUCTION
The first biological air treatment systems, particularly for odors, were introduced in France in the 1980s. Currently, there are around 300 industrial installations, mainly biofilters, but bio-scrubbers are now attracting considerable interest . These biological air treatment systems are well suited to treating high air flows with low levels of odor molecules or volatile organic compounds to . Design data and operating conditions have been established experimentally on pilot units in laboratories or at industrial sites. However, in order to better design, size, and manage bioprocesses through a detailed understanding of the processes involved, it is necessary to be able to model and numerically simulate all of the phenomena.
