1. Monoï(s) before industrialization

1.1 Place in traditional culture

Monoï(s) have always been present in Polynesian life, whether as part of traditional rituals, as remedies or for body and hair beauty care.

During ceremonies held on the marae (place of worship), Ma'ohi priests used monoi(s) to anoint newborns and sacred objects, and to purify offerings; monoi(s) also found their place in certain funeral rites (embalming ceremonies in the Marquesas).
