4. Exopolysaccharide applications in cosmetics
Thanks to their biological, chemical and physico-chemical properties, EPS can find applications in a wide range of sectors, including health, chemicals, phytosanitary, nutraceuticals, the environment, enhanced oil recovery and cosmetics. While bacterial exopolysaccharides have found applications (xanthan, gellan, hylauronan, succinoglycan, curdlan, pullulan, dextrans, etc.), it has to be said that only a handful of marine exopolysaccharides have seen any real development to date.
Among the sectors in demand for polysaccharides are cosmetics and cosmeceuticals. Indeed, the boundary between pharmaceuticals and cosmetics is becoming increasingly blurred as legislation evolves and users become more aware, hence the term "cosmeceuticals" to complement "cosmetics".
