5. Reactions in aqueous and ionic media

Organometallic catalysis in the aqueous phase has been applied to a wide range of reactions, including hydrogenation, hydroformylation, oxidation, olefin metathesis and polymerization. Among the major developments in redox isomerization, reactions carried out in aqueous or ionic systems are of particular interest, especially those performed in water or in the presence of water in the case of two-phase systems. Aqueous-phase synthesis has been shown to be an excellent alternative to processes developed using organic solvents, as water is a solvent with virtuous environmental properties that respects some of the fundamental principles of green chemistry.
