ABSTRACT

Designing a system which circulates water requires mastering the theoretical basis of the mechanics of fluids. This article presents the minimum knowledge required. It thus details the physical notions and the principles which govern the behavior of water in such circuits: hydraulic quantities (viscosity, compressibility, thermosyphons), principles of transfer of heat (convection, conduction, radiation), notions related to filtration (clogging, filtrate, suspension, etc.), chemical quantities and laws (Henry's law, crystallization, water pH, etc.) and characteristics of pipes (pressure, diameter, etc.)

This article is intended as a reminder of some of the concepts frequently encountered in the design of fluid systems in water. We try to be as general as possible, even if we take the liberty of detailing certain aspects rather than others. Specialized literature will easily fill in any gaps or inaccuracies in this article, and there are numerous cross-references to the more specialized articles in Techniques de l'Ingénieur.
