4. Engine-fuel matching

Because of its fueling and combustion modes, the AC engine can only run on a relatively narrow spectrum of fuels: gasolines, gaseous hydrocarbons (methane, propane, butane...) and a few oxygenated products (alcohols, ethers, ketanes...). The main limitation to the use of other fuels is the generation of combustion anomalies.

4.1 Abnormal combustion

These are combustions that do not result from the normal propagation of a flame caused by a spark: we distinguish pre-ignition and knocking.

Pre-ignition (or auto-ignition) characterizes combustion that starts before and independently of the ignition spark. When it occurs, it quickly becomes systematic, manifesting itself in cycles with very high maximum pressure and virtually no cyclic dispersion....
