Overview

ABSTRACT

The function of aerostatic bearings is to allow for guidance in rotation or provide axial supports with a bearing capacity at nil rotation speed. Air, which is always available remains the most used lubricant in these systems. This article presents the main static and dynamic qualities of aerostatic bearings. Simplified methods allow for their calculation but as they remain quite imprecise recoursing to digital methods lead to much better results. The general design rules based upon knowledge of the physical mechanisms involved remain essential. Regarding aerostatic bearings, the risk of pneumatic instability adds up to that of aerodynamic instability which is typical for high rotation speeds.

AUTHOR

 INTRODUCTION

The function of aerostatic bearings and thrust bearings is to provide rotational guidance or axial support with load-bearing capacity at zero rotational speeds. The broad lines and principles are the same as for hydrostatic lubrication, with which it is assumed the reader is familiar [BM 5 325]  : the pressure in the air (or more generally gas) film is maintained primarily (if not solely) by an external supply circuit. The aerostatic pressure of the lubricant film thus ensures that there is no contact even if the relative speed between the two parts of the guide is zero. The lubricant most often used is air, which has the advantage of being readily available.
