7. New generations of counter materials

Rotor architecture has evolved in recent years with computer-aided design and finite element analysis. By combining the thermal calculation on the rotor mesh and the braking study of the corresponding vehicle, we can determine its dimensioning, which, after verification by testing, is often less than 10% of the approach calculation, which then only needs to be refined (figure 9 ). Research is continuing into new cast materials with improved thermal conductivity to overcome the effects of thermal shock, including research into carbon/carbon or ceramic/ceramic composite rotors.

The carbon/carbon composite consists of a carbon reinforcement (fibers, fabric, felt or multidirectional textures) and a more or less graphitized carbon matrix.
