 INTRODUCTION

After recalling that a friction device is a transformer of mechanical energy into heat (article Braking theory ) and sized linings and counter materials according to specific power, the aim of this article is to give the selection criteria, design, general characteristics, tests and new generations of friction materials (linings and counter materials).

Counter friction materials with special geometries: automatic brakes, electric motor brakes or brakes for railway applications (e.g. TGV) will be studied in each article relating to the corresponding brakes.
