Overview

ABSTRACT

Mechatronics, by abolishing existing borders, can meet additional functions and develop a new offer while reducing costs. The development of mechatronics also implies an adaptation in the organization of the work and abandoning the conception by module or by technology. However, the multiplicity of technologies involved represents a difficulty, increased by the use of concepts which do not have the same meaning for everyone. The adoption of international standards in this field would benefit businesses whether they are developers or users of mechatronic solutions.

 INTRODUCTION

Mechatronics, a design approach aimed at multi-technology integration, is a major technological trend. It "plays an important role in production (machine tools, robots, etc.), particularly in the transport industry. Mechatronics can also be found in consumer electronics, public works machinery and the medical sector" . The mechatronics market has reached maturity, and it has become clear that we need to develop the specific standards that the industry needs for the future, on a global scale in terms of technology and trade" . Implementing a mechatronics approach means mastering new technological fields, but also rethinking the organization of design processes and customer-supplier relations. The standard, which provides a common language, optimizes customer-supplier relations and simplifies the drafting of technical specifications, is an appropriate response to these challenges.

This article takes stock of the standardization work initiated by France in 2008 with the publication of standards NF E01-010 and XP E01-013, their current international extension, and analyzes their contribution to the dissemination of mechatronics.
