6. Nickel, cobalt alloys and superalloys

Nickel and cobalt are neighbors in the periodic table, have the same density (8.9), a similar melting temperature (T f (Ni) = 1,446°C, T f (Co) = 1,493°C), the same modulus of elasticity (E = 210 GPa) equal to that of iron, and are ferromagnetic.

6.1 Nickel and its alloys

  • Nickel has the following characteristics:

    • CFC structure (a = 0.352 nm) ;

    • high corrosion resistance to non-oxidizing acids and bases; in oxidizing (sulfur-free) atmospheres, it can withstand temperatures up to 1,050°C ;

    • ferromagnetic material with high permeability,...
