3. Effect of cryogenic assistance on the machining process

The addition of cryogenic cooling has a strong impact on the cutting zone. In particular, thermal mapping is strongly affected. The consequences in terms of machinability (cutting force, tool life) and surface integrity (surface finish, residual stresses, microstructure) are analyzed in the following paragraphs.

3.1 Actions on the cutting zone

The way in which the cryogenic jet is introduced into the cutting zone affects cooling efficiency and thus modifies the thermomechanical mechanisms of chip formation. Optimizing cryogenic assistance involves optimizing cooling according to the tool/material pairing involved.
