2. Generation cutting tool

This is the most widely used hobbing method, both in terms of production quality and economic performance. It comprises three main tool families: the rack-and-pinion cutter, the hob cutter and the pinion cutter.

The choice of one or other of these tools, and therefore of process, is made according to general or even specific criteria. Sometimes, the choice takes into account the tools or machines available. In a global approach, we note that :

  • the rack-and-pinion cutter is widely used for large modules and, above all, for one-off or small production runs. As with the hob, it can cut any gear with the same module and pressure angle (and possibly the same helix angle);

  • the hob remains the most widely used tool. Its productivity, and therefore its cost per operation, still puts this tool...
