Numerous software packages exist to tackle the problem, with varying degrees of complementarity and competition. To make comparisons easier, here is a list of highly discriminating criteria to identify before choosing a solution:

  • Geometric tool model

    Level 1: a simple cylinder, sphere, cone, etc.

    Level 2: Cutting edges with cutting faces and, if necessary, clearance faces.

    Level 3: real surfaces with defects, wear, microstructure, etc.

  • Geometric model of the machined surface

    Level 1: scanning by an idealized tool (cylinder, sphere, cone, etc.), with programmed trajectory.

    Level 2: Level 1 + consideration of actual machine behavior (speeds, accelerations), part...
