In mechanical engineering, Loctite was a pioneer with the discovery of cyanoacrylate and anaerobic adhesives around 1955. The company went on to tackle the problems of thread-locking, cylindrical part fastening and press-fitting, and then various other mechanical part assemblies, with growing success.

There are various advantages and disadvantages to using adhesive bonding in mechanical engineering.

  • The benefits of mechanical bonding

    • Adhesive bonding simplifies assembly: no keys, pins, Grower washers or other washers, no locknuts to lock nuts (to prevent them from loosening under the effect of vibration).

    • It simplifies part design: shoulders and keyways can be eliminated, and simpler shapes can be produced at...
