2.1.1 Schematic representation

During chip formation, three material shear zones can be distinguished (figure 8 ):

  • primary shear zone: change in material flow direction and dissipation by plasticization ;

  • secondary shear zone: shear mainly due to friction between the chip and the cutting face (frictional dissipation);
