8. Copper and copper alloys

Note :

The reader is referred to the specialist articles on properties and numerical data in the treatise Metallic Materials.

Copper's face-centered cubic crystalline structure makes it highly ductile when cold, so it can be drawn very well, although it does require annealing between passes. Nevertheless, pure copper is rarely deep-drawn, as many of its alloys are far superior in this respect; it is, however, found in applications where its good chemical resistance, thermal conductivity and ease of forming by hammering or spinning have historically predisposed it despite its high price: sugar factories, brewery or perfume stills.
