8. Conclusion

Pyrocarbons have numerous applications as constituents of materials in a wide variety of fields: space, aeronautics, energy, biomaterials, etc. Their excellent properties and relatively low manufacturing costs make them very attractive. It is therefore difficult to predict in which new fields of application these materials will find new outlets.

These materials display a variety of structures, textures and properties that is astonishing – and unexpected to the non-specialist –. By controlling these via gaseous manufacturing parameters, the materials designer has a wide range of constituents at his or her disposal.

The study of the structure and structure-properties relationship of pyrocarbons is a very rich field, leading to the application and development of numerous characterization and modeling techniques.
