2. Why do we need newer materials for fuel rods ?

Since the 1940s it has been known that if the temperature increased above 400 °C, the corrosion (oxidation) rate of Zr progressively increased. This was evident during the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi site in March 2011 when the Zr components in the reactor core oxidized in presence of water (and steam) generating hydrogen gas according to the highly exothermic reaction :
