5. Sizing and calculations
5.1 General
The purpose of civil engineering studies is to design structures in such a way as to guarantee satisfactory behavior of the containment in the various normal and accident situations envisaged. These studies are carried out within the framework of current regulations: structures are therefore justified by applying the limit states theory, which forms the conceptual basis of modern civil engineering regulations worldwide.
The actions taken into account are classified respectively as permanent actions, such as the effect of self-weight and prestressing, variable actions, such as the effect of test or service loads, or accidental actions.
