4. Prevention of buckling

4.1 Definition and mechanisms

The risk of elastic and elastoplastic instability, also known as "buckling", is likely to occur when elastic deformations contribute significantly, through the changes in shape they bring about, to weakening the resistance of an enclosure to the applied loading. A typical case of such damage is the buckling of an enclosure subjected to external pressure, or that of a support subjected to axial compression.
