1.1 Particles and soot
This applies to the combustion of hydrocarbons known to be difficult to burn, such as bitumen and other heavy fuel oils, or to ageing, poorly maintained machines.
From an environmental point of view, poor combustion means the deposition of soot in chimneys and the emission of particles into the atmosphere. The finer these particles are, the longer they remain suspended in the air, and the longer they linger in the lungs of those who breathe them in. At less than 3 μm, they reach the pulmonary alveoli and can enter the bloodstream. They also serve as a carrier for other elements such as heavy metals and hydrocarbons.
