2. Combustion diagrams

Combustion phenomena are of particular importance, as they account for the bulk of the world's heat and mechanical power production: over 90% of the world's primary commercial energy consumption comes from the combustion of coal, oil or natural gas.

Combustion conditions largely determine the quantities of pollutants emitted by energy technologies and the performance of appliances. Combustion can be optimized, i.e. the best possible combustion efficiency, mainly by adjusting the dosage or excess of air, which determines flame temperatures and flue gas losses.

In this paragraph, we always assume that the combustion reaction involves gaseous species and that the various constituents can be assimilated to ideal gases, and that Dalton's law is therefore applicable
