2. Corrosivity of biofuels and fouling of engines and turbine combustion chambers

Biofuels can also be a source of corrosion and fouling of the metallic materials making up storage tanks, the pipes transporting them, and the engines and reactors transforming them into mechanical energy. In this section, we'll look at methods for assessing their corrosivity, and the remedies available to avoid these risks (choice of materials, "remediation" by adding inhibitors).

Various tests can be carried out to assess the corrosivity of a biofuel. The main ones are mass loss immersion tests and the standardized copper blade test.
