1. The malting-brewing sector, its energy consumption and performance

1.1 Malting

French malt production is significant, with 1.4 million tonnes of malt produced (2021/2022 campaign, source: Intercéréales and Malteurs de France), 80% of which is exported. The sector comprises 14 industrial plants (capacity in excess of 30,000 t of malt/year) and 6 small-scale plants (with a further 6 projects underway), with the same trends as in brewing, with the emergence of micromalteries for local use of cereals, particularly in the organic sector.
