Overview

ABSTRACT

The principle of in-stream turbine is interesting but few world places have the water speed and conditions necessary for cost efficiency. It is possible to create along shore very large basins storing tidal flows. Their closing dyke is open locally to sea by wide channels 1 or 2 km long in which are placed 10 or 20 in-stream turbines lines. This solution may be cost effective for 10% of world electric needs and 20% of French needs. These basins, paid for by electric supply, may have a key role for protecting shore against harmful high water levels or against high waves or typhoons. A part of the basin area may be used for very important energy storage (P.S.P).
