5. Furnace insulation

5.1 General design

Modern furnaces all feature a metal casing (casing), usually heavily reinforced to take the weight of the roof, the thrusts of the refractory walls and the forces generated by the expansion of the constituent parts.

Inside this envelope, several layers of insulating and refractory materials are used to :

  • limit heat loss;

  • protect the surrounding area and operating personnel.
