8. Pollution and the environment

As energy consumers, furnaces have a significant impact on the environment, particularly through their atmospheric emissions. For example, some very large furnaces in the chemical, iron and steel or cement industries discharge fumes from their chimneys that can exceed one million tonnes per year.

8.1 Pollutants

In the case of industrial furnaces, the most common pollutants are :

  • sulfur oxides (SO 2 and SO 3 ) formed from the sulfur contained in certain fuels (fuel oil, coke oven gas, etc.);
