1. General

1.1 Principles and main areas of application

In simple terms, a heat pump (HP) is a system that extracts heat from a "cold" source and releases it at a higher temperature to a "hot" source. To achieve this, a closed-loop, sealed circuit is used, in which a refrigerant circulates. The refrigerant's ability to change phase (between liquid and vapour) enables heat energy to be transferred from one source to another.

Schematically, the sealed circuit is made up of four main components: a compressor, two two-phase heat exchangers (a condenser and an evaporator) and an expansion device. In simple terms :
