5. Renovating old joints

As structural work lasts 50 years or more, while old sealants only last a few years, all old buildings should be re-caulked after 10 years.

The following is a list of repair methods.

5.1 Diagnosis of seal condition

The ageing of a joint, when carried out in accordance with the rules of the trade, is essentially linked to the ageing of the materials of which it is made (materials of the substrate and of the caulking). Metals, for example, have a natural tendency to corrode spontaneously in air, while stone has varying degrees of porosity.

Manufacturers' technical documents usually specify this information, which must be taken into account when assessing the service life of a joint.
