Urban lighting design

Each lighting system in an urban environment can be characterized by a function, lighting modes and the means to be used (type of lamp and luminaire, layout, spacing and height of light source supports).

In urban lighting, five lighting functions can be distinguished:

• lighting of roadways and points of conflict (traffic circles, underpasses, etc.), which refers to the photometric requirements necessary for visibility, safety and user comfort;

• pedestrian lighting also emphasizes decorative and atmospheric qualities;

• landscape lighting is used to illuminate urban landscapes: rivers, quays, plant and landscape features;

• architectural lighting is used to set the scene for buildings, monuments or works of art;
