4. Application of EC5-1-2
The standard deals with the design of timber structures for an accidental situation involving exposure to fire (cf. EC1-1-2). It distinguishes the differences with normal temperature design (cf. EC5-1-1) and provides additional information on hot resistance.
It applies to :
structures (or parts thereof) covered by EC5-1-1 and calculated accordingly;

building structures for which certain functions are required to be fulfilled in the event of exposure to fire in terms of :
prevention of premature collapse of the structure (load-bearing function),
limiting the spread of fire (flames, hot gases, excessive heat) beyond designated areas (separating function).
