AUTHOR

  • Pierre ROSSI : Research Director - Head of the Concrete and Cementitious Composites Division at the Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées (France) - Doctorate from the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées - Technical director of the national BEFIM (metal fiber concrete) project

 INTRODUCTION

his article is taken from the book on metal fiber concretes by the same author . It deals successively with the following points:

  • problems related to the implementation of BFM ;

  • the tensile mechanical behaviour of BFM, as well as corrosion problems;

  • Design methods for BFM structures with respect to compound bending and shear force;

  • design, suitability and inspection tests to be carried out according to the industrial application;

  • some current and potential industrial applications for BFMs.

It's important to note that modern fiber concretes are "à la carte" concretes: depending on the industrial application, the choice of fiber geometry, dimensions and dosage depends on the quality of the matrix (concrete) imposed by the specifications.

For example, the more compact the matrix (i.e., the higher its strength), the higher the percentage of fiber required; conversely, the less compact the matrix, the longer the fiber required, and the smaller the quantity that can be incorporated.

Note :

In this article, reference is often made to the BAEL rules. Readers are referred to the specialized articles in the Structure-Reinforced Concrete section of this treatise.
