2.1 Formation and role of wood in trees

  • Tree growth

    Plant tissues are formed from tissues specialized in cell division, the "meristems", composed of undifferentiated cells.

    There are two families.

    • Primary meristems

      They are located at the tips of stems and roots, and ensure that plants grow lengthwise by forming clumps of cells in a non-ordered arrangement.

    • Secondary meristems

      They appear in the plant from the second year onwards, in the form of continuous layers of cells called "assises", and ensure growth in diameter by producing cells aligned in the continuation of the meristematic cell...
